Hi - I’m Neil, although I generally use my formal name Ziyu Xu (许子俞) on my research.

I’m interested in understanding the theoretical properties of machine learning and statistical methodology we use in the real world, and improving them in a sound fashion. I currently work on multiple hypothesis testing with Aaditya Ramdas, and I am also interested in robust machine learning.

I studied computer science and machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University.

I am grateful to Justin Khim, Pradeep Ravikumar, and David P. Woodruff for showing me the ropes of how to do theory work.

In my undergrad, I had a stint of working on natural language processing applications, and had the fortune of working with Zhou Yu on dialog agents and Graham Neubig on machine translation.
